On the Cover
When we put out our March issue celebrating all things spring, who would have thought many, if not most of us, would be sequestered at home by the middle of the month trying to wait out the coronavirus pandemic?
Things looked much the same as we developed our April magazine and it was difficult to find a theme suitable for these times. The original cover story had to be postponed because of a precautionary cancelation. We also didn’t know what would change in the period between when we printed and when we delivered this publication.
But with so many folks eyeing isolation, we thought we would share a story of one of the most isolated places in our country: Big Bend National Park in South Texas. HER editor Danielle Dupree traveled there last year and had been itching to share her adventure and wonderful photographs. This seemed like a perfect opportunity and in tune with the times — if only in an exaggerated sense. It wasn’t a perfect fit, but it was a functional one.
There is plenty of information about COVID19 in our newspaper; at our website, texarkanagazette.com; and on a variety of other platforms. There isn’t much about it in this publication. That is by design.
So what you have opened up in these pages is a little bit of escapism. Or, in the case of Danielle’s trek down and around the bend, a roadmap for a future trip. Or, for those who really do want to get away from this madness, there probably isn’t a more isolated place to which you can retreat.
But stay with us for the moment. Reading has always been a private endeavor. What could be more perfect?
Danielle’s narrative begins on Page 4.
