Little River and Red River counties still reporting zero COVID-19 cases

- BY LORI DUNN

Positive cases of COVID-19 are increasing every day, but two area counties have reported no cases at all.

As of Tuesday, Little River County in Southwest Arkansas and Red River County in Northeast Texas had no known positive cases.

“We are still at zero,” Little River County Judge Mike Cranford said Tuesday. “I attribute that to the grace of God but also the people of Little River County have really stepped and adhered to the governor’s recommendations.”

Cranford said he knows there will probably be a case sooner or later.

“I’m an optimistic person but I’m also a realist too, and I know it’s just a matter of time,” he said.

Cranford said county residents “have really stepped up.”

“That’s a testimony to people understanding the severity of how serious this could be,” he said. “And we are very appreciative of that.”

No curfews have been established in the county as a result of COVID-19.

“There have been inconveniences, but I’m hopeful that if we are inconvenienced at the front end of this, the closer we are to getting back to normal,” he said.

Little River County includes the towns of

Ashdown, Foreman and Wilton.

In Red River County, County Judge L.D. Williamson said everyone has been very cooperative.

“We have had no big meetings, our church services have been streaming and we have not had too many people visiting from outside the county,” he said.

Williamson said a curfew is in effect for all residents, and though there have been some complaints, people are taking it seriously.

“People are wearing masks and not complaining too much,” he said. “We locked down our courts and things pretty early and doing everything we can by phone. I think it’s paid off.”
