Want to know something you can do to help your community? It won’t cost you anything. And it won’t take much time. You won’t even have to leave your house. But it will bring benefits for years to come.

So far only about 55% of local residents have completed the 2020 U.S. census. That’s below the national average of more than 60%.

Texarkana needs the rest of its residents to get with the program.

The Census Bureau must submit a count to the president by the end of the year, so the sooner we all comply the easier it will be for them to complete that mission.

The population count every decade determines how many members each state will have in the House of Representatives. And how many votes each will have in the Electoral College. Every decade, some states gain, other lose. The census also determines where billions in federal funds are allocated. Billions that help pay for a variety of essential programs and services as well as infrastructure construction and maintenance.

No state wants to miss out on those dollars. Those funds also flow to the local level and that’s how you will be helping the Twin Cities.

This year the census form can be completed online — at my2020census.gov — and for most folks that’s a quick, easy and painless process. A mail-in option is also available.

It’s easy to put the census aside for another day. But in the end you will have to complete the form — if you don’t then a census worker will come calling in person. So save yourself the hassle. Go ahead and help your community, friends and neighbors by completing the census today.
