- By Greg Bischof

TEXARKANA — Searchand-rescue teams continued Monday to look for a man who disappeared while boating on the Red River early Saturday afternoon.

Charlie Marshall, 48, went missing around 1:40 p.m. Saturday after launching the boat eastward from a point near the Index Bridge on U.S. Highway 71.

The boat floated for about half a mile before it apparently started taking on water and sank. A woman who was also in the boat managed to swim safely to the river’s south bank.

The Index Bridge crosses the river on U.S. 71 about eight miles north of Texarkana.

Miller County Office of Emergency Management Coordinator Joe Bennett said his office has developed information showing that Marshall may possibly be a Hope, Ark., resident, but there’s also information that he either may or used to be a resident of Lewisville, Ark., and Texarkana as well.

The search has now extended to Fulton, Ark.

Bennett added about 20 to 25 search-and-rescue personnel, supplied not only by Miller County’s OEM, but also the Little River County OEM, Miller County Sheriff’s Office, Miller County volunteer fire departments, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and the Texas Wildlife Game and Fish Commission are participating in the search.

Bennett said Sunday that authorities were able to find some floating debris as well as objects that may have been inside the boat: a cooler, a box and a rod and reel. The boat still hadn’t been recovered as of Monday, he added.
