Arkansas-side Board to vote on tax break for UPS

- By Karl Richter

TEXARKANA, Ark. — During a regular meeting Monday, the city Board of Directors will consider approving the refund of some taxes to the UPS Customer Center on East 50th Street.

The Board will vote whether to endorse UPS’ participation in the Arkansas

Tax Back Program, which refunds the local use and sales taxes companies pay. Local government approval is required for participation in the program.

The Board will also vote on condemning eight substandard structures, at 1209 Ash St., 2108 Ash St., 2625 Delaware St., 926 Grand Ave., 1502 Hilltop St., 5542 Old Blackman Ferry Road, 306 Prince St. and 402 Prince St.

When the Board approves condemning a structure, notice is given to the property’s owner that they have 30 days to obtain a building or demolition permit. If the owner fails to do so, the city may proceed with demolition itself.

The Board will also consider placing tax liens on six properties to recoup the city’s cost of demolishing substandard structures on them. The cost of demolition will recorded as delinquent taxes on the properties, at 1305 Laurel St., 1301 Booker St., 1122 Mary St., 307 Charles St., 309 Charles St. and 925 County Ave.

The meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday and will be conducted via the Zoom online meeting app. It will be live streamed on the city’s YouTube channel.

Anyone wishing to have comments read during the public hearing or the meeting’s citizen communication time must submit them by 10 a.m. Monday to City Clerk Heather Soyars at heather.soyars@txkusa.org.
