PG Hawks fall to Argyle in big clash

TEXARKANA, Texas — Outnumbere­d 2 to 1, they fought like warrior poets.

Pleasant Grove fell to Argyle, 52-41, in a Braveheart­like battle of football titans in a varsity game at Hawk Stadium on Friday.

“The kids fought together, and they fought hard,” Pleasant Grove head coach Josh Gibson said. “I am proud of that fight. I am proud of who we are. We knew it could be a game like this with the depth that Argyle has, and we challenged our kids to play through injuries. Jaylen Woodside may have broken his left wrist, but he is right-handed. He didn’t care. He continued to play.”

The Hawks fall to 1-1 while Argyle climbs to 2-0. Both teams are ranked in the top 10 in their respective divisions.

Logan Johnson rushed for 163 yards on 12 totes and two touchdowns, while teammate Nick Martin had 103 yards on 11 carries and a pair of scores for the Hawks.

Johnson broke free on a sweep to the right side, spun, tricked a tackler and went into the end zone on a 35-yard run to knot the game at 14-all with 2:47 left in the second quarter.

Martin ran in the Hawks’ first score when he battled his way to paydirt on a 3-yard rush to make it 14-7 with 7:09 to go in the second.

The game tilted in favor of Argyle for the first part of the game, and the Eagles were up 14-0 with 11:55 to go in the second. Pleasant Grove had some penalties that contribute­d to Argyle’s early success.

“Our kids fell down, but our kids got up; that is what it’s all about,” Gibson said. “I think the team will continue to climb like we always do. Hats off to Argyle. We knew they were going to come in with firepower and numbers.”

Landon Jackson grabbed a Woodside pass and blazed his way into the end zone to inch the Hawks closer, 35-21, with 7:19 to go in the third.

Martin scored his second touchdown of the game with 38 seconds to go in the third on a 45-yard run. Pleasant Grove still trailed, 42-27.

The Hawks had 183 rushing yards in the first half compared to the Eagles’ 239 yards of passing.

CJ Rogers threw a 65-yard TD pass to Cole Kirkpatric­k with 11:42 to go in the first quarter. Rogers found tight end Jasper Lott from 4 yards out as Argyle took a 14-0 lead in the first.

Knox Scoggins ran in a 9-yard touchdown with 46 seconds to go in the second, and the Eagles were up 21-14.

Argyle put up 21 points in the third quarter. Rogers threw three touchdown passes in the quarter—a 53-yarder to Kirkpatric­k, a 32-yarder to Cash Walker and a 5-yarder to Kirkpatric­k.

Caden Dodson hit a 41-yard field goal to make it 45-27 for the Eagles in the fourth quarter. On a busted play, Jett Copeland scooped up a fumble and returned it 43 yards to put Argyle up 52-27.

Johnson busted some tackles and sped into the end zone for PG with 2:58 to go in the fourth. The score inched the Hawks a little closer, 52-34.

Alex Galvan caught a 22-yard pass from Woodside which brought Pleasant Grove to within 11, 52-41. Landon Jackson recovered the ensuing onside kick. The Hawks ran some run plays, and the clock expired.
