Johnson’s three TDs power Paul Pewitt past Atlanta

NAPLES-OMAHA, Texas — Kadrien Johnson scored three touchdowns — one on a 90-yard kickoff return — to power Paul Pewitt to a convincing 40-21 victory over Atlanta in high school football action Friday night on the Brahmas home field.

It was the season opener for Paul Pewitt while the Rabbits slip to 0-2 on the season.

Atlanta took a 7-0 lead less than a minute into the game when Keyshawn Easter hauled in a 53-yard scoring strike from Cameron Dickerson.

Pewitt answered right back, with Johnson returning the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to paydirt. Daulton Vissering’s PAT tied the score at 7-all.

Johnson also scored on runs of 6 and 11 yards as the Brahmas rolled up 341 yards rushing. Deiontray Hill led the hosts with 155 yards on the ground. He scored on a 6-yard run and also caught a 63-yard TD from Hayden Green.

Green also connected with Vissering for a 11-yard touchdown for Pewitt, which led 27-14 at the half.

Dickerson added a 47-yard scoring run for Atlanta, and Caleb Hamilton tacked on a 19-yard scoring scamper.

The Rabbs had 147 yards rushing and 47 through the air. Both teams had one turnover, a lost fumble for Pewitt and an intercepti­on for Atlanta.

Trenton 35, Maud 16

TRENTON, Texas — Maud battled Trenton on even terms for a half, as the teams deadlocked at 8-8.

The host Tigers took control in the second half, outscoring the Cardinals 27-8 in the second half en route to posting a 35-16 win.

Maud totaled 255 yards of total offense, wich 130 through the airways and 125 on the ground.

The Cardinals struck paydirt first, with Tucker Sanders dashing 12 yards for a game’s first score with 3:26 left in the half. Nate Brower caught a 2-point conversion pass frm Cason Lamb.

Maud (0-2) didn’t score again until 11:35 remained in the fourth quarter. Briley Barron went the final 8 yards for the score, and he ran for 2 points.

Trenton (2-0) finished with 317 yards total offense, including 290 on the ground. Both teams turned the ball over twice.

The Cardinals play at Beckville on Friday.

Harmony 38, Hughes Springs 34

HUGHES SPRINGS, Texas — Michael Everett accounted for five touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter, as the Harmony Eagles rallied for a win over the Hughes Springs Mustangs Thursday night at Mustang Stadium.

The game was moved to Hughes Springs because of poor field conditions at Harmony.

Everett carried 21 times for 149 yards and four touchdowns and caught two passes for 46 yards and another score as Harmony improved to 1-1 on the season. Hughes Springs drops to 1-1.

Hughes Springs built a 22-16 halftime lead and led 28-22 heading into the fourth quarter. Everett scored on a 2-yard run and converted the 2-pointer to put Harmony in front 30-28 early in the fourth, but Tyson Daigle scored on a 4-yard run and Hughes Springs held a sim 34-30 lead after a failed try for 2 points. Caleb McNeil, and Everett’s subsequent 2-pointer made the final 38-34.

McNeil passed for 91 yards. Dallin Seahorn rushed for 40 yards on seven carries. Boston Seahorn had 18 tackles and a forced fumble, Aron Bell 15 tackles and Chris Arellano 14 tackles for the Eagles. Kendall Hays recovered a fumble.

For Hughes Springs, Daigle carried 18 times for 116 yards and two touchdowns and Trayvon Kennedy added 105 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries.

Hughes Springs visits Winnsboro and Harmony will host New Diana next Friday.

Hooks defeats Winnsboro

Hooks’ seventh-grade football team defeateed Winnsboro, 28-14, in middle school football action Thursday night.

Ripken Birdwell scored two touchdowns and passed for another for the Hornets. He scored on ruhs of 60 and 45 yards and also hooked up with Landon Harrison for a 95-yard touchdown pass.

Jamarion Smith added a rushing touchdown, and also had a 2-point conversion, and Blaze Connell had a 2-point conversion, and also recovered two fumbles on defense.

Winnsboro won the eighthgrad­e game, 50-36. Dontraviou­s Coulter had three rushing touchdowns for Hooks on runs of 50, 40 and 25 yards.

Jorge Velazquez passed 50 yards to Braden McDonald for a touchdown ans also recovered a fumble for a TD for the Hornets. Mikey Baysinger added a 2-point conversion, and Hudson Davis had an intercepti­on.
