Burglary suspects caught with help of K9 officer

- By Lori Dunn

TEXARKANA, Texas — Two DeKalb, Texas, men have been arrested in Texarkana, Texas, on charges of burglary and evading arrest.

Thomas Renick and Malcom White Jr, both 19, of DeKalb, were arrested and taken to the Bi-State jail. They have been charged with burglary of a building and evading arrest, said Shawn Vaughn, spokesman for Texarkana Texas Police Department.

TTPD received an alarm call about 11 p.m.

Friday from H&W Powersports on New Boston Road, Vaughn said.

When Officer Nick Tirone arrived at the business a couple of minutes later, he found the fence behind the building had been cut and an overhead door had been pried open. He could also see someone walking around inside.

As officers were getting ready to go in to make an arrest, one of the men inside noticed Sgt. Kris Smith keeping an eye on them through a window. The men took off running and reached the fence, where they were met by Tirone and his K9 partner, Argus. When Argus loudly “announced” his presence, the two men surrendered.

Police also discovered that both suspects had outstanding felony arrest warrants.

Renick was wanted on three counts of burglary and one for alleged theft of a firearm in Red River County. White had probation-violation warrants that stem from a 2018 conviction for evading arrest and aggravated assault against a public servant. Renick’s total bond for all his charges was set at $72,500, and White’s was $55,000.

DeKalb is about 35 miles west of Texarkana on U.S. Highway 82 in Bowie County.
