Joan Wright-Hunter, beloved wife and mother, departed this world gracefully in her Texarkana home on Thursday evening at the age of 85.

Born February 27, 1935 in Arkansas, Mrs. Hunter was a devout Catholic and longtime resident of Texarkana.

After graduating from St. Edward’s Catholic High School and attending Texarkana Community College, Mrs. Hunter became a registered radiology technologist and worked for St. Michael’s Hospital in Texarkana, St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paris, TX, and Arkansas Baptist Hospital in Little Rock.

Joan immensely enjoyed her time as a volunteer Sunday school teacher at St. Edward’s Catholic Church. An avid golfer, she cherished many summers with family and friends at Little River Country Club in Winthrop, AR. In her youth Joan was a pitcher and shortstop for the Yellowjackets, Texarkana’s premier boy’s fast pitch softball team and the only female player in the league. She also played for the Smith-O-Lene Oilers women’s baseball team.

Mrs. Hunter is welcomed in Heaven by her father, Lawrence Alfred Wright and mother, Mary Elizabeth Wright, as well as her two brothers Lawrence “Buddy” Wright and Kenneth Wright.

She leaves behind childhood sweetheart and husband of 61 years, Dr. George Rheamond Hunter, her sister Elaine Mitcham, brother-in-law Ray Mitcham, and sister-in-law Virginia Wright. With George, she is survived by her five children Rheamond Hunter and wife Lisa, Pat McGough and husband Mike, Tony Hunter and wife Marla, Mary Palmore and husband Steve, as well as John Hunter and wife Lori.
