Maud gets first win, Brahmas rip Bears

MAUD, Texas — Maud exploded for 30 third-quarter and the Cardinals posted their first victory of the season, a 38-14 win over Cumby Friday night.

Maud’s Cason Smith was the Cardinals’ catalyst, running for two touchdowns and passing for two more as the Cardinals go to 1-4.

Smith rushed for 131 yards and scored touchdowns on runs of 70 and 4 yards. He also connected on 5 of 13 passes for 149, with a pair of TDs going to Landon Smith covering 55 and 30 yards.

Smith also returned an intercepte­d a ball and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown.

Maud rolled up 297 yards of total offense, including 248 on the ground. The Cardinals had one turnover, a lost fumble.

Cumby, which trailed 8-6 at halftime, slips to 1-2 on the season.

Paul Pewitt 35, DeKalb 6

MOUNT PLEASANT, Texas — Paul Pewitt built a 14-0 halftime lead and went on a 21-6 fourth-quarter scoring spree to beat the host DeKalb Bears.

Pewitt (5-2, 3-0), the district leader, was ignited by Deiontray Hill, who rushed for 230 yards and four touchdowns. Hill carried the ball 31 times and scored on runs of 71, 2, 18 and 2 yards. He also had an intercepti­on and forced a fumble on defense, as Pewitt forced the Bears into four turnovers (two intercepti­ons, two fumbles lost).

DeKalb had 175 yards of total offense while the Brahmas finished with 337, all the ground.

The Bears’ lone touchdown came in the fourth quarter when quarterbac­k A.J. Burgin passed 47 yards to Ramaj Vaughn. The extra point was blocked.

Dalton Vissering kicked all five PATs for Pewitt, which plays next Friday at Daingerfie­ld in another key district game.

Hooks 49, Paris Chisum 12

HOOKS, Texas — Hooks’ Davarious Clark rushed for three touchdowns to power the Hornets to a convincing 49-12 victory over the Chisum Mustangs.

Hooks (2-4, 2-1) jumped out to a 7-0 first-quarter lead and blew it open with a 21-point second quarter in taking a commanding 28-0 halftime cushion.

Clarks scored the Hornets’ first three touchdowns in a game. His first was on a 2-yard run, followed by a 46-yard gallop and 6-yard run.

David Johnson returned a punt 565 for Hooks’ next score. Benji Johnson passed 83 yards to Keilon Estell for a touchdown, followed by Keyshawn Wall’s 8-yard run and Monterian Henderson’s 11-yard run.

The Hornets amassed 363 yards total offense, with 201 coming through the airwaves. Chisum had 207 yards, with all by 7 coming on the ground. The hosts did not punt on the night.

Hooks plays at DeKalb next Friday.

One area teams wins

Host James Bowie continued to play well in district as the Pirates defeated Quinlan Boles, 22-18, at Simms.

James Bowie, however, was the only Northeast Texas team in the Gazette circulatio­n area to win.

Other area teams suffering losses were Atlanta, 44-20 to Tatum; Queen City, 56-7 to Waskom; and Redwater, 39-10 to Daingerfie­ld.
