Hawk boys win district cross country title

PITTSBURG, Texas — Pleasant Grove’s boys won the District 15-4A cross country championsh­ip in the 5,000-meter event this week at Pittsburg High School.

The Hawks finished with 24 points, followed by Pittsburg (54), Paris (55), Gilmer (116) and Paris North Lamar (119). The team with the fewest points wins.

On the girls side, North Lamar took first place with 46 points while Gilmer was runner-up with 53. Pleasant Grove finished third with 88 points. The girls course covers 2 miles.

The first-place teams and top qualifiers advance to next week’s regionals.

Dai’Mond Harvey led the Hawks with a second-place finish in 17:02.80, following Pittsburg’s winner Jacob Berryhill (16:29.12).

Pleasant Grove had four other athletes in the top 10. Elmo Mejia was third in 17:33.71; Brooks Beck was fifth in 17:33.71; Lucas Edwards sixth in 17:35.96 and Mark Bultemeier eighth in 17:42.43.

The Hawks other finishers were Peyton Legrand (18th, 18:46.95) and Carson Sanders (22nd, 18:59.64).

Pleasant Grove’s Emma Henard took top honors in the girls’ race. She ripped the tape in 12:56.75. Teammate Jazmin Hever took fifth in 13:31.09, with both qualifying for regional.

The Hawk junior varsity won first place in its division, nipping Paris 27-28 for the title.

Pleasant Grove had five athletes who finished in the top 10. Landon Beck won the gold in 18:35.28. Campbell Jackson was fourth in 19:22.07, followed by William Otero, sixth, 19:27.22; Cieran Power, seventh, 19:36.67; and Danny Santiago (eighth, 19:41.65).

Tigers crush Corsicana

SULPHUR SPRINGS, Texas — Texas High wasn’t looking ahead to Tuesday’s showdown with Longview for the District 15-5A team tennis championsh­ip.

The Tigers looked like they needed no tuneup as they crushed Corsicana, 25-0, in a non-district dual match Thursday on the Sulphur Springs High School courts.

“We are very pleased with the way kids played,” said Texas High coach Toby Watson. “We really like how this team is looking as we head into next week. Our next match will be at home against Longview for the district championsh­ip. This will be the biggest match of our fall season up to this point.”

That match will start at 3:30 p.m.Tuesday at the John Watson

Tennis Complex.

Following district finals, the state playoffs are bi-district (Oc. 26-27), area (Oct. 29-31), Nov. 2-3 (regional quarterfin­als), Nov. 6-7 (regional tournament) and Nov. 11-12 (state tournament).

Subvarsity Football

Hawks roll to 28-6 win

TEXARKANA, Texas — Pleasant Grove defeated Harleton, 28-6, in subvarsity football action this week.

After taking a 2-0 lead on a safety, the Hawks’ Torion Phillips scored on a 3-yard run to make it 8-0 PG.

Other Hawk touchdowns were by Daylen Crawford (18-yard run), Raymon Harvey (65-yard pass from Ahkari Johnson) and Phillips (40yard run). Thomas Smith also ran for a 2-point conversion.

Hooks’ eighth game romps

PARIS, Texas — Hooks’ eighth grade thrashed Paris Chisum, 30-0, in football action Thursday.

The Hornets (5-1) were led by Dontraviou­s Coulter, who had four rushing touchdowns. His scores came on runs of 40, 45, 1 and 75 yards. He also ran for a 2-point conversion. Mikey Baysinger had 2-point conversion run.

On defensive, the Hornet’ Jorge Velazquez forced a fumble and teammate Bryce Parker recovered a fumble.

Daingerfie­ld sweeps pair

REDWATER, Texas — Daingerfie­ld won a pair of middle school games Thursday night against Redwater.

The Tigers won the eighth grade game, 28-14, and the seventh grade contest 30-0.

Volleyball

TMS wins 2 of 3 matches

Texas Middle School won two of three games this week against Marshall. TMS won the eighth grade A game, 25-14, 28-26. Carlyn Clack served 10 points and Sarah Woodman nine points for the winners.

TMS won the seventh grade A match, 26-24, 25-13. Taryne Stiger served 13 points and Kyleigh Perkins 10 points for TMS.

Marshall won the seventh grade B contest, 25-17, 25-15. Alexxys Richardson served five points for TMS.

Red Lick wins matches

RED LICK, Texas — Host Red Lick won a pair of volleyball matches against Paul Pewitt. In the eighth grade A match, the hosts won 25-15, 25-18.

Addiysn Gildon served 10 points, and Avenly Bingham seven for Red Lick. Pewitt got seven service points from Claire Wilson.

Red Lick won the seventh grade A contest, 25-5, 23-26, 25-21. Abby Henard (14 points) and Mallory Northcutt and Reagan Hargrave (10 points each) paced the winners. McKensi Jackson served six points for Pewitt.
