Fairview Elementary celebrates centennial

- By Andrew Bell

TEXARKANA, Ark. — Fairview Elementary School celebrated its 100-year anniversary Friday afternoon, with Texarkana, Arkansas, Mayor Allen Brown making a proclamation on behalf of the school.

Brown proclaimed Friday the 100th-year anniversary of Fairview with an official statement in the Fairview library.

Before his statement, to drive home the significance of the longevity of the school, Brown listed a bevvy of things that were different about the country 100 years ago to students in attendance, including women’s voting rights, the price of a stamp and the invention of Band-Aids.

“I congratulate Fairview on your 100th anniversary,” he said. “That is an accomplishment within itself. I’ve been involved in the school district for many years, but not quite 100. So, I know you guys are proud to celebrate this.”

After Brown’s proclamation, District Superintendent Dr. Becky Kesler took the podium to speak to students.

“While we celebrate the past today, what I want you to do as students is look towards the future,” she said. “I encourage you to do great things because you never know, just like you guys are looking back on history, in a few years somebody is going to look back on your history.”

Brown then used a rather large pair of scissors to cut the honorary ribbon as a symbol of the school’s accomplishment.

Fairview Principal Bryan McDonald added closing remarks and thanked everyone involved for making the celebration possible.
