Hawks trounce North Lamar, 69-41

TEXARKANA, Texas — Pleasant Grove outscored North Lamar in each quarter and rolled to a 69-41 win in a District 15-4A boys varsity basketball game on Friday at Hawk Gym.

“I thought we got out there pretty good for two quarters,” Hawks head coach Dwight McCowan said. “We struggled to score in the third quarter. I can’t be upset with a 28-point victory in district. We did well on defense, but our free throws were bad.”

Pleasant Grove shot 38 percent on just 8 of 21 charity shots and were 54 percent from the field on 27-of-50 shooting.

The Panthers knocked down 17 of 45 shots as they shot 38 percent from the field. North Lamar had 21 turnovers, and the Hawks had 10.

Quarter four was played on even terms, but Pleasant Grove outscored the Panthers, 14-13. T’vondrick Henry, who finished with a game-high 24 points, had five points in the fourth as did teammate Tre Stuart. Stuart ended his game with seven rebounds and 10 points.

Both teams had a lackluster third quarter with the Hawks outscoring North Lamar, 11-7. Torey Phillips, who scored 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds, had four, third-quarter points as did Henry.

Pleasant Grove outrebound­ed the Panthers, 31-27, and sank a total of seven shots from downtown.

Led by Henry’s nine points, the Hawks had a huge second quarter, outscoring North Lamar, 26-6. Henry poured in nine points in the quarter and Phillips had seven.

Pleasant Grove went on an 13-0 run in the second, and an 17-0 run from later in the second until early in the third. During the run, Henry leapt into the air and slammed it home.

T’vondrick Henry knocked down a pair of shots from downtown in the first quarter. Teammate Tre Stuart added five points, including a trey, as Pleasant Grove took an early 18-15 edge.

The Hawks are 9-5 and 2-0 in District 15-4A. Pleasant Grove won the junior varsity game, 52-35.
