Active COVID-19 cases spike 600 in Bowie County over weekend

The Texas Department of State Health Services on Monday reported a leap in Bowie County’s estimated active coronaviru­s case count of almost 600 since Thursday, moving the total from 353 to 950.

An explanatio­n for the jump was not available by presstime Monday, but a lag in reporting resulting in a sudden spike is possible.

From Thursday to Monday, Bowie County’s cumulative case count increased from 3,593 to 3,622 and deaths because of COVID-19 among residents went up by six, from 144 to 150. There have been 3,969 recoveries in the county.

Elsewhere in Northeast Texas, Red River County’s total case count increased from 353 to 357, Morris County’s from 471 to 483, Cass County’s from 1,013 to 1,029 and Titus County’s from 2,414 to 2,442, according to TDSHS.

From Thursday to Monday in Southwest Arkansas, Miller County’s active case count fell by 30, from 103 to 73, while total confirmed cases rose by 26, from 2,259 to 2,285, according to the Arkansas Department of Health. There have been 19 deaths because of COVID-19 and 2,193 recoveries in the county.

Lafayette County’s cumulative confirmed case count increased from 290 to 306, Nevada County’s from 561 to 577, Pike County’s from 666 to 669, Little River County’s from 765 to 782, Howard County’s from 889 to 900, Hempstead County’s from 1,173 to 1,224 and Sevier County’s from 1,631 to 1,645, according to ADH.

In Northwest Louisiana from Thursday to Monday, Caddo Parish’s case count increased from 21,545 to 22,074 and Bossier Parish’s from 10,953 to 11,278, according to the Louisiana Department of Health.

Statewide, Arkansas reported 228,410 confirmed cases and 4,650 deaths on Monday, Louisiana reported 385,942 cases and 8,590 deaths, and Texas reported 1,965,585 cases and 34,394 deaths.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Monday reported 25,018,520 total cases in the U.S. so far, with a national death toll of 417,936.
