JEROME MCGARY SR.

Jerome McGary, Sr, age 76, beloved husband, father, and grandfathe­r went home to be with the Lord on January 20, 2021 after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

He was born and raised in Douglassvi­lle, Texas in a family of five sons and six daughters. A few years after excelling in basketball and track at Panhandle High School, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the Vietnam War. Following an honorary discharge, he served for more than 20 years in the Texas National Guard before retiring. During his working years, he was a loyal employee at Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant, the City of Texarkana, Texas, and lastly, Red River Army Depot where he retired after 22 years of dedicated service.

Since the 1970s, Jerome could usually be found supporting his kids and grandkids in their sporting events. He was also a huge supporter of L-E athletics and the Dallas Cowboys.

He leaves a loving family to cherish his memories: wife, Harriet Odom McGary; children, Alicia Coleman, Jerome McGary (Charlotte), Valerie Ray (Charles), and Chris McGary (Shaunda), Linda Washington, and Jeffrey Noel; siblings, Ray McGary (Alma), Dora Ann Watson, Josephine Hamilton (Henry), Diane McGary, Helen Lucas (Bernard), Theresa Solomon, and Wanda House (Rick); eighteen grandchild­ren, four great grandchild­ren, and many other special family and friends.

He was predecease­d by his parents, PG and Gurtis Richardson McGary, his brothers, PG, James and Ben McGary, and his son-in-law, Gary “Maxwell” Coleman.

The family will receive friends and family on Monday, January 25 at Haynes Mortuary from 5 to 7 pm.

Under the direction of Haynes Mortuary, graveside services will be held at Chapelwood Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, January 26 at High Noon. Social distancing and masks are required.
