Area baseball teams open tourney play

NEW BOSTON, Texas — Host New Boston, Paul Pewitt, Queen City and James Bowie opened up play at the McDonald’s Classic baseball tournament on Thursday.

New Boston shut out West Rusk, 10-0, in the first game of the day, while Queen City was edged by West Rusk, 8-6, in the following game.

Paul Pewitt held James Bowie scoreless, 7-0, and routed Chapel Hill, 14-3. The New Boston and Chapel Hill game was still in progress at presstime.

New Boston 10, West Rusk 0

Will Henson threw a 2-hit shutout to lead the Lions over the Raiders in a 6-inning, run-rule victory. Henson had three strikeouts.

Brian Reid, Henson, Connor Bobbit, Xavier Rowden, Landon Yeatman and Kyle Atkinson each had an RBI in the first inning as New Boston took a 9-0 edge.

Reid had a pair of doubles, while teammates Bobbit, Yeatman and Barrett had two singles apiece for the Lions. New Boston totaled 10 hits on the day against the Raiders.

The Lions were flawless in the field, as they did not commit an error. West Rusk did not fare well and had seven errors.

Will Jackson absorbed the loss for the Raiders, gave up nine runs on five hits, pitched two innings and struck out a pair.

Paul Pewitt 7, James Bowie 0

Hayden Green pitched a 3-hitter, earned the win, pitched seven innings, walked two and struck out 12 to lead the Brahmas to the shutout win over the Pirates.

Tanor Mines smashed a 2-run homer, while Green tripled and singled for Paul Pewitt. Mines went 3 for 4 for the game, as did Green. Green drove in three runs.

Logan McCullough, Zane Deberry and Whitt Rogers each had a single for James Bowie. Garrett Brown took the loss, threw 5 2/3 innings, allowed five hits and struck out four. Batters hit .238 against Brown.

Slade Burnett pitched for the Pirates in relief. Burnett threw 1 1/3 innings, struck out one and gave up four hits.

James Bowie had four errors in the field, while the Brahmas had just one. Paul Pewitt totaled 10 hits on the day.

Paul Pewitt 14, Chapel Hill 3

Dalton Vissering struck out seven, and Noah Mayo had three strikeouts at the Brahmas rolled past the Red Devils. Vissering earned the win.

Mines drove in seven runs as he slugged a pair of triples. Dayton Granberry and Tavion Brown were each 2 for 4 at the dish.
