Eagles sweep Bulldogs in baseball doubleheader

- By Brian Tyl

TEXARKANA, Texas — Jared Davis had a stellar pitching performance to lead Texas A&M UniversityTexarkana to a 6-1 victory over Jarvis Christian College in the first game of a doubleheader, while pitcher Trevor Stone was solid in game 2 as the Eagles won, 11-5, in two college baseball games on Thursday at George Dobson Field.

“We had some timely hitting in the first game,” Eagles head coach Steve Jones said. “We had some bad at-bats when we had some guys in scoring position. I thought we were kind of flat. A win is a win and we did what we needed to. I just would have liked to see the offense get going better.

“In the second game, I felt like we had more energy. We had some new guys in the lineup. Our offense flowed better, and we were more locked in during the second game. When we got guys in scoring position, we scored them. I was much happier.”

TAMU-T starting pitcher Davis threw all seven innings, pitched six consecutive scoreless innings, hit a batter, struck out 10, walked two, threw 112 pitches and allowed a run on five hits to earn the win on the hill.

“Jared was good, and we needed it,” Jones said. “We’ve had players out with injuries and have been piecing it together. Jared came out and threw a great game. We got a lot of innings out of him and got the win; I was happy.”

Hunter Reid led off the TAMU-T fifth with a double close to the right field line. Reid moved up to third on Ryan Peterson’s sacrifice bunt. Reid was left stranded of Jarvis College got two consecutive groundouts.

Mateo Martinez helped pad the Eagles’ lead with a 2-run single to right center in the fourth inning. Coming around to score were Wyatt Stavinoha, who had doubled to left center, and Angel Mauricio, who singled with a hot roller to left. TAMU-T held a 6-1 lead.

Chris McGinty crushed a

solo homer to left center that went over the scoreboard to give TAMU-T a 2-1 lead in the second frame. Stavinoha singled past the first baseman and Mauricio walked. Stavinoha and Mauricio scored on a fielding error as the Eagles snagged a 4-1 edge.

Reid laced in an RBI single for the Eagles in the bottom of the first to knot the game at 1-all. Coming around to score from third base was Jack Skinner, who had walked, moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt and took third on a passed ball.

TAMU-T committed two errors in the game, both in the seventh inning, and cranked out eight hits. The Bulldogs had one error and finished with five hits.

Jalen Thomas took the loss on the mound for Jarvis Christian College. Thomas threw six innings, allowed six runs on eight hits, struck out four and issued three free passes.

Eagles 11, Bulldogs 5

Not typically a starting pitcher, closer Trevor Stone stepped into the role of starter, threw 6 2/3 innings, tossed 104 pitches, earned the win, allowed five runs on seven hits, struck out seven and did not issue a free pass as TAMU-T built a lead and finished with the victory.

“Stone is a reliever for us, and we have had some guys who are really sore,” Jones said. “We needed him to get in some innings and give our bullpen some rest. We got that.”

TAMU-T had its most productive inning in the sixth, scoring six runs on five hits. Cole Chambers hit a Texas League to the first-base side, stole second, moved to third on Reid’s single and scored on a fielder’s choice to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead.

Stavinoha hit a Texas Leaguer over the first baseman’s head, and Tyler Black walked to load the bases for TAMU-T. Ethan Rodriguez walked as Reid scored to make it 4-2. Peterson smacked a 2-run double to right field to extend the Eagles’ lead, 6-2.

Skinner had an RBI sacrifice fly to center and Austin Majorsky singled to right center as TAMU-T took an 8-2 lead going into the fourth inning.

Chambers hit a 2-run single to center to give the Eagles a 10-2 lead in the fifth inning. Peterson, who had been hit by a pitch, scored on a balk to extend the lead, 11-2. Jarvis Christian College put up three runs in the seventh on four hits to make it a 6-run game, 11-5.

Micahel Sikorski entered with two outs in the seventh for TAMU-T, faced one batter and induced a groundout to seal the Eagle victory.

Skinner slapped a 2-run single to left center to score Black and Rodriguez, who had both singled, to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead after the second frame.

The Bulldogs inched closer to TAMU-T with a solo home run in the third, 3-2.
