March Madness is here
The NCAA tournament begins today and there will be madness for sure to ensue.
Last season, there was no tournament. This season, the Big Dance continues, but with stringent safety precautions for everyone involved.
The NCAA also will allow fans to be attendance this year.
NCAA president Mark Emmert issued a statement March 11, as to who would be allowed to attend and other measures that will be taken throughout the duration of the tournament.
“The NCAA continues to assess the impact of COVID-19 in consultation with public health officials and our COVID-19 advisory panel,” Emmert said. “Based on their advice and my discussions with the NCAA Board of Governors, I have made the decision to conduct our upcoming championship events, including the Division I men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, with only essential staff and limited family attendance. While I understand how disappointing this is for all fans of our sports, my decision is based on the current understanding of how COVID-19 is progressing in the United States.
“This decision is in the best interest of public health, including that of coaches, administrators, fans and, most importantly, our student-athletes. We recognize the opportunity to compete in an NCAA national championship is an experience of a lifetime for the students and their families. Today, we will move forward and conduct championships consistent with the current information and will continue to monitor and make adjustments as needed.”
The cancelling of last year’s tournament was the first time that has happened since 1938.
Pre-COVID, in 2019, the 68 games were attended by a total of 660,000 paying spectators.
Having family members in attendance should give the participants an added edge or motivation to put forth their best performance.
Kentucky and Duke, two traditional blue-blood programs, will not be in the tournament.
Lastly, my alma mater, the University of Arkansas, plays Colgate in the first round and many experts say is a heavy favorite to make it to the Sweet 16. That in itself, will cause madness in the Natural State.
