Perot spring break movies Saturday: ‘Finding Nemo,’ ‘Dazed and Confused’

- By Aaron Brand

TEXARKANA, Texas — Hula hoops, festival games and spring break movies for young and old — all are on tap Saturday at the Perot Theatre.

The Perot Spring Break features the Disney Pixar favorite “Finding Nemo” at both 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., fun and games from noon to 2 p.m. and the Richard Linklater-directed, Texas-filmed classic “Dazed and Confused” at 7:30 p.m.

Children’s games will include a hula hoop contest and cornhole.

Tiffani Whitehead at the Perot Theatre says they aim to bring spring break to downtown. “The weather looks like it’s going to be beautiful, so I’m very excited,” she said. “We’re mimicking the Perot Holiday Traditions activities and engagement with the community aside from just movies so it’s an all-day kind of thing.”

For the games and other activities starting at noon, Main Street will be shut down so children can play in front of the historic theater. Movie admission to “Finding Nemo” will include these activities.

“We’re going to have a hula hoop contest, cornhole boards will be set up — some carnival-style games like the duckies in the little kiddie swimming pool.

“We’re going to have a hula hoop contest, cornhole boards will be set up — some carnival-style games like the duckies in the little kiddie swimming pool. There will be some activities: hopscotch and sidewalk chalk that kids can (use to) decorate the streets and sidewalks in front of the theater,” Whitehead said, adding about the daytime movie selection, “We thought if we’re going with a spring break beach theme we can certainly bring the fish to the big screen.”

“Finding Nemo” is a 2003 computer-animated classic about young Nemo’s fishy adventures when he’s caught and winds up in a dentist’s fish tank. He tries to escape and his dad, a clownfish named Marlin, sets out to find him.

Because they’re still doing socially-distanced seating at the Perot, tickets must be

purchased in person or via phone. Sanitation procedures are still in effect, while masks are recommended but not required.

“We’re hoping that this event will grow,” Whitehead said, with food trucks possible in the future.

And about “Dazed and Confused,” she said, “A very classic movie, super excited about it. Of course, last day of school — not as much spring break but it still brings back so many memories that we all remember of getting out of school.”

“Dazed and Confused,” released in 1993, follows a group of Austin, Texas, teens on their final day of school back in 1976. Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, Parker Posey and Adam Goldberg are among the stars.

Main Street will be also be closed at 6:30 p.m., so anyone coming to see the evening film can also participate in a hula hoop contest and try their aim at cornhole. Meanwhile, Pecan Point Gastropub & Brewery will provide drinks nearby.

“Pecan Point, since the weather looks to be gorgeous, they are going to have an outside bar set up,” Whitehead said. Drinking adult beverages will be possible in front of Pecan Point with tables arranged there.

Whitehead said the Texarkana Regional Arts and Humanities Council is not presenting this event. Rather, it’s the Perot Theatre Management Company.

(Movie admission is $6. The Perot Theatre is located at 221 Main St. For more information, visit the Perot Theatre box office or call 903-792-4992.)
