Both Sheila and Joe Mark were born in Pocahontas but shortly after Joe Mark’s birth the family moved to New Boston, TX where Joe started working for Red River Army Depot as an accountant. Mike was born a couple of years later as the family’s only true Texan. Joe died in 1961 leaving Ava a young single parent, a job she took very seriously. She made up her mind that she would not remarry until her children had completed college. Her children always knew they came first in her life. Her kindhearted ways extended beyond her own family out into the community. She was actively involved in the First Baptist Church of New Boston where she sang in the choir, taught Vacation Bible School and Girls’ Auxiliary. She also volunteered with Cub Scouts, 4H and was a volunteer at the New Boston Hospital. As her children got older, she taught piano lessons, worked at The Western Store, worked in the County Clerk’s office and eventually at Red River Army Depot. She and her best friend Mabel Fear enjoyed singing duets both in church and as entertainment at the New Boston Nursing Home where she often appeared as Minnie Pearl complete with a price tag hanging from her hat. Ava was known for her unique laugh and people would often hear her laugh and come to locate her in a store saying “I knew you were here because I heard you laugh”.

Ava would often say she was very lucky as she had two wonderful husbands. She married Elby Wright (Mac) McMichael January 8, 1981. Once their new home was completed she moved to Hooks, TX. She became a member of the Hooks First Baptist Church and sang in the choir. She enjoyed helping Mac run his land development business and mobile home park. She and her neighbor Betty Whittington started a city library in a vacant building in the Hooks business area with donated books and shelves built by their husbands. The library eventually met the requirements to become a member of the Texas Library System. Mac predeceased her on March 8, 2003. She continued to live in Hooks until 2018 when she moved to Cornerstone Retirement Community in Texarkana, TX. Hers was a life well lived. She is deeply missed by her family and friends. She is buried in the New Colony Cemetery in Linden, TX next to her husband Mac. Due to the pandemic, the family was restricted to a graveside service in 2020. They hoped to host a celebration of her life this year to honor her as the fabulous mother/grandmother/aunt she was; but, with the ongoing pandemic and family in multiple states this is not possible.
