Commissioners to honor retired sheriff
NEW BOSTON, Texas — Honoring retired Bowie County Sheriff James Prince will take center stage at the Bowie County Commissioners Court meeting at 9 a.m. today.
The commissioners, who will meet inside their gathering room on the courthouse’s second floor, will deliver a presentation honoring Prince, 68, who served the county as sheriff for 20 years — the longest of any of the county’s sheriffs.
Last month, Bowie County Judge Bobby Howell said one of the best things Prince did was replaced the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program with the BASE (Basic Awareness Safety Education) program.
Commissioners will also listen to a presentation by a Small Business Association representative regarding loans to help assist small businesses that may have been damaged by the last month’s winter storm.
In other business, court members will also consider taking action to continue requiring the wearing of masks and face coverings inside the courthouse and other county buildings, as stipulated in the Center for Disease Control guidelines until rescended by the county judge and Commissioners Court.
Commissioners also plan to open bids for the sale of a county owned 2007 Chevrolet Impala as well as accept a bid for the sale.
Court members further plan to re-appoint Larry Meadows, Ron Rogers and Steve Hawkins to serve another two years, and Ben Franks and John Paul Sellers for an additional year, on the county’s Emergency District No. 5 Board of Commissioners.
