- By Andrew Bell

TEXARKANA, Ark. — Jamiya Greene of Ogden, Arkansas, has been nominated for the 2021 TRiO Hall of Fame at the Arkansas Association of Student Assistance Programs.

Greene is a senior at the Arkansas High School Collegiate Academy, which is a partnership between the Texarkana Arkansas School District and University of Arkansas-Hope/Texarkana that provides opportunities for high school students to earn college credits in a college environment. She plans to graduate with a high school diploma and an Associate of Arts degree.

She has been a member of TRiO Upward Bound for four years. TRiO Programs are Federal outreach and services programs designed to identify and provide services for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

After graduation, Jamiya plans to attend the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, where she will pursue a premed biology degree.

“It means a lot to me to be nominated for the TRiO Hall of Fame,” Greene said. “I am so happy and grateful to receive the nomination and to be honored for my participation in the Upward Bound program. This nomination shows me that I have shown certain characteristics that make me a qualified candidate, and I will continue to show my authentic self.”

Greene said she has thoroughly enjoyed her experiences in Upward Bound.

“My experiences with TRiO have really helped me become aware of what I can achieve academically and personally,” she said. “I have been in Upward Bound since my freshman year of high school and the amount of support the advisors have offered is really great.”

She said they have given her ACT waivers in order to be able to take the ACT test at no cost, as well as tutoring services for all subjects and monthly educational sessions where she learned something new each time.

“Some of my best experiences have come from going on trips to places such as Atlanta, Georgia, and Houston, Texas, because it showed me that the world has so much to offer and for me to experience,” Greene said. “In our summer weekly sessions, we are able to do fun activities on a daily basis. The program comes at no cost to me or my mom, and I have the opportunity to get paid for my participation.”

Greene said the program has helped her define what her dreams and goals are by asking questions that push her to think about where she wants to be in life.

“We were honored to have had Jamiya in our program and are proud of her academic achievements,” said Dr. Nicole Woods, Director of TRiO Upward Bound. “Accompanied by her leadership skills, she has a promising future at the University of Arkansas and as a healthcare provider.”
