Firefighters seek witnesses to Monday fire

- By Lori Dunn

TEXARKANA, Texas — Rubble is all that is left of the building that previously housed an outlet mall on New Boston Road.

“We’re razing the rest of the building today to try and get to interior hot spots,” said Texarkana Texas Fire Marshal Chris Black on Tuesday.

They are also seeking possible witnesses to the fire.

Firefighters responded to the fully-involved structure fire about 6:30 p.m. Monday night at the former flea market in the 2600 block of New Boston Road, that began its life as a major retail outlet.

The building was a total loss. The cause is still being investigated, Black said.

“We don’t know if we will ever know exactly how it happened,” Black said. “It’s 70,000 square feet so a lot to go over.”

No one was injured.

Part of the building collapsed Monday night and firefighters knocked the rest of the building down early Tuesday.

The building had been vacant for a number of years but has been an outlet mall and a Howard’s Department store.

Texarkana Arkansas Firefighters also responded for mutual aid.

Firefighters are talking to possible witnesses and anyone who might have been in the area at the time of the fire, Black said.

Anyone who might have information is asked to call TTFD at 903-798-3994.

According to tax records, the building is owned by Checkk Properties LLC, a company based in Texarkana Texas. Lisa Thompson, spokeswoman for the City of Texarkana Texas said the city said that once the fire department is finished with the scene, the city will work with the owners to make sure the location meets code requirements.
