THS routs Marshall, 72-52
TEXARKANA, Texas — Texas High saw its 20-point lead get whittled down to four before rallying back for the big win over Marshall.
The Tigers finished shooting 51 percent from the field on 27-of-53 shots and hit eight 3-pointers during a 72-52 victory over the Mavericks in a District 15-5A boys basketball game Thursday at Tiger Center.
Texas High (9-10, 3-2) is back in action today, traveling to Sulphur Springs.
Marshall (5-15, 1-4) finished with a 49 percent shooting percentage on 21-of-43 shots. THS had just 15 turnovers, Marshall committed 23 turnovers, and both teams pulled down 27 rebounds.
The Mavericks started the second half with an 8-0 run to cut their deficit to five points, and once during the third Marshall was within four points (42-38). Texas High went on a 6-2 run from that point, and the Tigers scored the final four points to take a 9-point lead (52-43) into the final period.
THS continued to control the momentum and, after a 10-4 run to start the fourth, led by 15 (62-47) with 5:39 left. The Tigers were up by 21 with 2:18 remaining.
Xavier Dangerfield scored 15 points to lead the well-rounded offensive attack for Texas High.
Damon Augustus and Jakholbe Johnson added 13 points apiece, Michael Thomas scored 10, Jayden Godwin nine and Jaylen Godwin eight.
Dangerfield and Jayden Godwin each had six rebounds.
Giko Smith scored 17 and Jacorey Smith scored 12 points and had 12 rebounds for the Mavericks. Che-Che Roberson added nine points.
The Tigers started the game with the hot hands, draining five 3-pointers in the first quarter, including three on consecutive trips down the court during a 13-0 run to stake THS to an 18-2 lead with 3:07 left in the first quarter.
Another long-range 3 and traditional 3-point play by Texas High gave the home team a 24-6 lead, and the Tigers led 24-9 at the first break.
Texas High scored a pair of 3-pointers from beyond the arc in the second and had a pair of 3-point plays from the foul stripe, but Marshall closed the half on a 7-0 run to head into the locker room with the Mavericks trailing the home team by 13 (38-25).
The Tigers, who led by as many as 20 in the second quarter, shot 44 percent (12of-27) in the first half, and Marshall shot 40 percent (10-of-25). Six Texas High players scored at least five points in the opening half.
