Eagles drop pair, eliminated from nationals

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Texas A&M University­Texarkana took a pair of losses — both 6-0 — during the second day of the NAIA National Tournament Oklahoma City section at Ann Lacy Stadium Tuesday.

The Eagles, who wrap up their season at 43-14, lost to host Oklahoma City, 6-0, and then fell to Eastern Oregon, 6-0.

Unlike their early game, the Eagles managed to put together some offense in their second game of the day, but never pushed a run across to aid pitcher Anna Westberry, who lasted four innings and gave up two runs on seven hits.

Mackenzie Vittitow pitched 1 1-3 inning, and Dorrie Cormier worked the final 1 2-3.

TAMU-T banged out eight hits, with Katelyn Slamer singling twice. Erika Richardson and Sarah Velasquez each had a double, and Laura Dyer, Baylee Stautzenbe­rger, Alyssa Gillen and Makenzie Moore added a hit each.

The Mountainee­rs broke through with four runs in the fifth inning and tacked on two more in the sixth against the Eagles.

In Tuesday’s opener, Oklahoma City pitcher Shelbey Cornelson hurled a 1-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks to even TAMUT’s record at 1-1 in the 4-team tournament.

Amy Crabaugh belted a 2-run home run for the Stars in the sixth inning after Mallory McCoy’s RBI double gave the home team a 3-0 lead. Tiffany Paul scored later in the inning on an error.

Crabaugh scored the game’s initial run in the third after advancing to third on a wild pitch and coming home on an error. Kennedy Jackson singled in the second run of the inning for a 2-0 OKC lead.

Westberry absorbed the loss, working 4 1-3 innings and allowing two runs on five hits. She had two strikeouts and a walk. Vittitow pitched 2 2-3 innings of relief and surrendere­d four runs — three earned — on five hits with a strikeout and one walk.

Gillen had the Eagles’ lone hit.
