In a first, White House offering paid internships
TEXARKANA, Texas — The White House is offering paid internships for the first time.
Announced by President Joe Biden on his social media on June 6, the internships are part of a public service leadership and development program. The program aims to equip interns with valuable leadership skills while supporting the White House and administration.
Dr. Daniel Mintun, assistant professor of political science at Texas A&M University-texarkana, offered tips on how to stand out as an applicant for an internship at the White House.
“(It’s important to) ask yourself, ‘Why are you a good candidate?’” Mintun said. “Connect your strengths to the internship posting.”
According to the White House website, applications will be reviewed as they are received. For this reason, candidates are being urged to apply as soon as possible.
Mintun encourages personal organization.
“You want to show that you are a reliable candidate that takes the time to proofread and carefully review their materials.”
Applicants must meet at least one of three criteria —
• enrolled in a two- to four-year accredited institution for undergraduate or graduate degree;
• graduate of a two- to four-year accredited institution no more than two years prior to the first day of the internship program; or
• veteran of the U.S. armed forces who possesses a high school diploma or its equivalent and has served active duty no more than two years prior to the first day of the internship program.
Mintun’s said applicants should “tell the interviewer why you are excited about the possibility of the internship.”
The last day to apply for the internship is Friday, June 24. Selected candidates will be notified the week of Aug. 8. The intership will be from Sept. 12 to Dec. 16.
