University to host legal issues workshop for area teachers
TEXARKANA, Texas — Texas A&M-Texarkana is hosting a professional development session for area teachers from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. July 26.
The “Education and the Law” workshop was created by the education and political science and pre-law programs, along with the East Texas chapter of American Board of Trial Advocates.
Each participant will earn a continuing education credit for learning about topics such as special education, right to privacy, student discipline, equal treatment, students and their first amendment rights, search and seizure, civic education, sexual harassment, and gender identity. Presenters will include attorneys, judges and school administrators.
“School law is extremely broad and complicated,” said Mary Beth Womack, assistant professor of education at TAMU-T. “Our goal is to provide a one-day workshop for all educators so they can stay current on legal issues facing educators.”
ABOTA sponsors the regularly scheduled East Texas Teacher’s Law School.
Additional funding for the conference is provided by Norton & Wood Attorneys at Law and TEXAR Federal Credit Union.
“I’m proud to be involved in bringing this opportunity to our area teachers,” said political science professor Gary Bugh. “I think much of the information will help them as they navigate educating the next generation in a very complex world.”
Gift bags, snacks and lunch will be provided. For more information or to register for the program, contact professor Mary Beth Womack at mwomack@tamut.edu.
Pre-registration for the event is not required, but to receive the complimentary lunch, participants must register by July 22.
