Pleasant Grove falls to Gilmer; AHS, L-E both win

Gilmer seems to have Pleasant Grove’s number. The Buckeyes seem to have a lot of opposing team’s numbers.

The Hawks put up a fight again, but it was Gilmer that came out on top, 35-14, Friday night in the District 7-4A, Division II opener for both teams.

Pleasant Grove (4-2, 0-1) must now have some help or the Buckeyes (6-0, 1-0) could walk away with another district championsh­ip.

“We knew they were a good football team before they showed up,” PG coach Josh Gibson said. “And they proved it tonight.”

PG’S Spencer Danner bolted 22 yards to cut Gilmer’s lead to 28-14 with 9:02 left in the game. He finished with 53 yards on 11 hard runs.

“I was really proud of our team’s fight tonight,” Gibson said. “We put our defense into some tough situations at times and they never backed down.”

Quarterbac­k Ahkhari Johnson dashed 45 yards for the Hawks’ other touchdown. He finished with 193 total yards, 122 yards rushing on 17 carries and 4-of-14 passing for 71 yards.

Johnson also had an intercepti­on on defense as did teammate X’zavion Johnson, who finished with a teamhigh 10 tackles.

Pleasant Grove will celebrate Homecoming next week by hosting the Pittsburg Pirates.

Arkansas High 39, HS Lakeside 31

The Razorbacks used a come-from-behind win over the host Rams at Hot Springs.

AHS quarterbac­k Nate Wall scored on 15-yard run and a 2-point conversion made it 14-8 Lakeside.

Trailing 21-8, Arkansas High made its move. Running back Courtland Loudermill had a 3-yard TD run.

Wall connected with Deandre Burnell Wall on a 41-yard scoring strike, closing the Hogs’ deficit to 28-23.

The Rams took a 31-23 lead into halftime.

Wall found wide receiver Marcus Floyd from 16 yards out for another Razorbacks score. The 2-point attempt to tie the game failed, leaving the Hogs trailing 31-29.

AHS’ Hayden Moya kicked a 32-yard field goal to put the visitors up with about 7 minutes remaining.

Wall scored a 1-yard sneak to complete the comeback,

39-31.

The Hogs (2-4, 1-2) will be back home Friday against Little Rock Parkview.

Liberty-eylau 40, Spring Hill 25

The Liberty-eylau Leopards opened District 7-4A, Division II with a the victory over the Spring Hill Panthers at Harris Field.

The Leopards improve to 5-1 on the season, while (Longview) Spring Hill falls to 1-5.

L-E’S only loss was to Sulphur Springs two weeks ago.

The Leopards racked up 424 yards of total offense, with quarterbac­k Jaydin Hampton completing 14 of 24 passes for 256 yards. Freshman wide receiver Dequane Prevo caught eight passes for 130 yards and three touchdowns.

Greg London led the ground attack with 100 yards on 17 attempts.

L-E didn’t get on the scoreboard until the second quarter, but Leopards scored three touchdowns for an 18-10 halftime lead. It was the duo of Hampton to Prevo that scored touchdowns of 15, 32 and 23 yards.

L-E travels Friday to Gilmer.

Texas High, open

The Tigers (5-1, 2-0) had an open date on Friday, with Texas High returning to 8-5A, Division II action at home against Marshall (4-3).

Dekalb 39, Paul Pewitt 27

The Bears’ finally ended a losing skid against the Brahmas, posing their first win in the series since 2011.

Dekalb running back Winky Williams carried the ball 12 times for 170 yards and three touchdowns. He also made 15 tackles, with one causing a fumble. Xavier Hawkins had 20 stops and Ross Tapley 17. Tapley also had two receptions for 108 yards.

Kiondre Schesinger returned a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown and he had 15 tackles on defense. Bears quarterbac­k Kaleb Dooley completed 3 of 4 passes for 142 yards a touchdown.

“We played great defense,” said Dekalb coach Buddy Griffin. We held Pewitt to 27 points and they had been averaging something like 48 points a game.”

James Bowie 28, Maud 22

SIMMS, Texas — James Bowie built a 28-14 lead and Maud put on a fierce second-half rally that fell short in the two teams’ District 9-2A, Division II opener.

The Pirates held on for the victory, giving them a crucial district win.

Both teams are now 3-2 on the season.

The Pirates, who led 12-6 in the first half, had to recover an onsides kick with under 2 minutes to play to seal the victory.

James Bowie’s Tyner Melton scored two touchdowns on runs of 4 and 70 yards. Lane Johnson also scored on a 65-yard run and Dylan Braley scored on a 2-yard plunge.

Maud’s touchdowns came on Rip Thomas’ 36-yard run, Caso Laevitt’s 27-yard run and Devin Myrtle’s TD pass.

“It was obviously a big win for us tonight,” said Pirates head coach Shawn Wells. “We built a two-touchdown lead and they fought back and pulled within 28-22 with 1:38 remaining. It was hardfought game.”

Hooks 41, Paris Chisum 7

PARIS, Texas — Hooks scored the game’s first 41 points in rolling the lopsided win over Paris Chisum.

Hornet quarterbac­k Trip Baysinger passed for three touchdowns. His first covered 14 yards to Jatavious Johnson, his second was a 14-yarder to Matthew Hays and third was a 15-yarder to Kayshawn Walls.

Walls, who rushed for a game-high 192 yards, also scored on runs of 12 and 75 yards.

Hooks’ Ripkken Birdwell also scored on a 4-yard TD run.

Prairiland 28, Redwater 16

PATTONVILL­E, Texas — The Dragons fell short in this district game.

Redwater’s touchdowns came on Reilly Orlando’s 32-yard run, Ryan Satterfiel­d’s 28-yard pass from Gavin Carrell, and Brody Johnson’s 18-yard TD pass from Carrell.

LR Parkview 47, Hope 21 LITTLE ROCK — The Patriots (4-2, 3-0) scored touchdowns five different ways in a 5A-south

conference win over the Bobcats (1-5, 1-2) at War Memorial Stadium.

Parkview’s seven touchdowns came by pass (three scores), the run, a pick-6, an intercepti­on return, a kick return and a punt return.

The Patriots did all of their scoring in the first half.

Mount Ida 72, Lafayette County

MOUNT IDA, Ark. — The Lions (4-1, 2-0) ran for more than 500 yards without throwing a pass in cruising to the Conference 2A-3 win over the Cougars (0-6, 0-3).

Mount Ida rushed 56 times for 510 yards, led by Jacob Westfield’s 142 yards and 3 scores.
