Gaineses tackle castle in new series

- By Raye Smith

Waco royalty: HGTV renovation darlings and Magnolia Network coowners Chip and Joanna Gaines are back to make the small town of Waco, Texas, even more beautiful with the latest spinoff of their hit series. “Fixer Upper: The Castle” airs Friday, Oct. 14, concurrently on Magnolia Network, HBO Max and discovery+.

The Gaineses, who’ve transformed dozens of houses on “Fixer Upper” thanks to Chip’s renovation skills and Joanna’s design prowess, take on their biggest project yet this time around. Completed in 1913, the historic Cottonland Castle in Waco sat vacant and crumbling for years before being snapped up by Chip and Joanna in 2019, and the couple began restoring the once-great structure into a modern marvel.

Fans can follow along through the highs and lows as the Gaineses get into the not-so-glamorous, nitty-gritty aspects of renovating a home that’s more than a century old. From plumbing woes and electrical changes to surprise damage and more, Waco’s best-known renovators flawlessly blend their signature farmhouse chic style with the property’s historic construction.

The new series airs as part of a recent deal between HBO Max and the Warner Bros./discovery-owned Magnolia Network, for which HBO has added a slate of new Magnolia-specific content and fun favorites. Alongside “The Castle,” HBO Max subscribers can now enjoy all five seasons of the original “Fixer Upper” series — “Fixer Upper: Welcome Home,” “Magnolia Table with Joanna Gaines,” “The Lost Kitchen,” “Growing Floret,” “Family Dinner with Andrew Zimmern,” “Restoration Road with Clint Harp” and “Maine Cabin Masters” — and more.

Don’t miss the action as Chip and Joanna Gaines take on their most ambitious fixer-upper yet in “Fixer Upper: The Castle,” premiering Friday, Oct. 14, on Magnolia Network, HBO Max and discovery+.

More Martha Magic: Everyone’s favorite homemaking aficionado returns Friday, Oct. 14, to Roku with a brand-new show — but this time, she’s taking viewers outside for some fun in nature. Filmed at Stewart’s own farm in Bedford, New York, “Martha Gardens” follows the iconic, multi-hyphenate personality over the course of a year spent on her 153-acre property. Along the way, she shares tips, tricks and tools that gardening enthusiasts of all skill levels can take to heart.

As she gives advice along the way, Martha shows viewers exactly what it takes to keep up with farming and gardening on a property that includes pastures, greenhouses, orchards and animals (to name just a few of her responsibilities). And with episodes broken up into monthly segments, everyone from aspiring hobby farmers to casual home gardeners can get a glimpse at the realities of a four-season farm life, from the coldest January deep-freezes to sweltering summer days.

Fans of the icon have no need to flip the channel for more catered content, either. “Martha Bakes” is currently available to stream on the platform, while two more new series from her farm — “Martha Cooks” and “Martha Holidays” — are set to premiere Nov. 16 and 18, respectively, on Roku.

“Martha Cooks” follows Stewart back to the kitchen, where she makes some of her favorite recipes using fresh ingredients from her own farm. “Martha Holidays,” meanwhile, sees Martha dive into some of the most scrumptious meals and tasty treats for the holiday season. She also offers decorating tips (of course), gift ideas, crafts and more.

Don’t miss the premiere of “Martha Gardens” Friday, Oct. 14, on Roku, because no one does it like Martha.

Fool’s Paradise: Amid a season of cozy sweaters, pumpkins galore and spooky scares, world-famous magician duo Penn & Teller return with the ninth season of their own mysterious brand of magic. “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” kicks off Friday, Oct. 14, on CW.

Penn & Teller sit at center stage with a keen, uninterrupted view of everything, and a live studio audience adds to the pressure as hopeful magicians from around the world take the stage to attempt the impossible: perform a trick so good that Penn & Teller can’t figure out how they managed to do it.

After just one performance of each trick, the famous duo must immediately try to work out the mechanics behind the mischief while host Alyson Hannigan (“How I Met Your Mother”) interviews the talented contestants. But a magician never reveals their secrets, and so to preserve the magic for the uninitiated, the acts’ magical methods are never revealed to the audience. Instead, Penn & Teller communicate in code while backstage judges versed in the ins and outs of the magic industry determine whether Penn & Teller have really been duped.

Any magician who can fool the judges wins a “Fool Us” trophy to take home, as well as a performance with Penn & Teller during their celebrated stage show at the Rio Allsuite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

Immerse yourself in the magical mayhem as a new season of eager hopefuls try to pull one over on two of the most famous magicians of our time. Season 9 of “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” premieres Friday, Oct. 14, on CW.
