Eagles softball dominant in doubleheader sweep
TEXARKANA, Texas — Anna Westberry tossed a 5-inning perfect game in the first game and Texas A&M-Texarkana continued its dominance in the second game as the Eagles swept Arkansas Baptist, 8-0 and 9-1, Sunday at Bramlett Field.
It was the season-opening softball games for both teams.
Westberry didn’t allow a hit over the game shortened to 5 innings by the 8-run mercy rule. She struck out 12 of the 15 batters she faced and didn’t allow any baserunners from the Little Rock school.
TAMU-T scored 5 runs in the second inning, highlighted by Macey Cutsinger’s 2-run triple and RBI hits by Marcie Reeves and Mollie Harrison.
The Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to earn the win. Cameron Alardin singled in a run and Reeves scored on a passed ball to reach the 8-run rule.
Grace Cantu and Alardin had two hits and two RBI each for the hosts.
In the second game, three of the top four hitters for TAMU-T banged out seven of the team’s nine hits and also drove in four runs.
Cantu was 2 for 3, including a triple and a double, to knock in a pair of runs, Katie Slamer belted a 2-run homer, and Cutsinger was 1 for 1 and scored three runs.
Slamer drove in four runs with a pair of hits. She scored twice.
Cutsinger was 1 for 1 with two walks. She scored two runs.
Winning pitcher Stephanie Chico gave up two hits and one run in 4 innings of work. She fanned six and didn’t walk a batter.
Mackenzie Vittitow pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
The Eagles’ next doubleheader will be Saturday at Centenary College in Shreveport, La.
