Eagles sweep Centenary in softball; split in baseball

SHREVEPORT, La. — Texas A&M University-Texarkana ace Anna Westberry pitched a complete-game victory to lift the Eagles to a 4-2 softball victory over host Centenary College on Sunday.

TAMU-T rallied for a 10-5, 9-inning victory in the nightcap, keeping the Eagles unbeaten after four games this season.

Westberry (2-0) gave up six hits, two runs (both earned), struck out four and walked one.

Her teammates supported the left-hander with 13 hits. Patti Swimley led the way with three hits, including a double.

Katie Slamer had two hits, including a double, and scored twice, Baylee Stauzenber­ge two hits and an RBI, Macey Cutsinger had two hits and Grace Cantu a run-scoring triple.

Sarah Velasquez added an RBI-single and Cantu had a sacrifice fly.

No details were available on the second game.

TAMU-T’s next softball game will be a doublehead­er Tuesday at Arlington Baptist University in Arlington, Texas. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.

EAGLES SPLIT BASEBALL GAMES

STERLINGTO­N, La. — Texas A&M-Texarkana erupted for six runs in the bottom of the seventh to upset 19th-ranked University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma, 6-5, Sunday in the Cajun Collision Tournament.

No. 23 Loyola University defeated the Eagles, 8-5, in Sunday’s second game.

TAMU-T (2-6) was held scoreless until the seventh and final frame against Science & Arts. Pudge Carlisle sparked the late rally with a 3-run double, and Brandon Riley and Kyle McMullen had run-scoring singles. Brian Reid also got an RBI after he was hit by a pitch.

Julian Macias had two hits and scored a run for the Eagles. Saneil Patel pitched one inning of relief and notched the pitching win.

Loyola unloaded on TAMU-T starter and loser Collin Fenili, who lasted only 3 2/3 innings. He was touched for 10 hits, eight runs (all earned), struck out seven and walked three.

Carlisle paced the Eagles with three hits to knock in a run, Dakota Leopold and McMullen each had two hits, including a double, to drive in a run.

TAMU-T’s next baseball game will be 2 p.m. at home against Lyon College.

BASKETBALL FOUKE CAPTURES DISTRICT CROWN

JESSIEVILL­E, Ark. — Fouke Junior High girls defeated Glen Rose, 26-22, to claim the district basketball championsh­ip on Saturday.

Fouke finished the season at 19-1 overall and won the regular-season conference title with a 7-0 record.

“Glen Rose gave us a hard time tonight, and our role players really stepped up. Even though it was a low-scoring game our kids made timely shots when we needed them,” said coach Mo Williams.

“I’m really glad our girls got this win. They really took in the entire experience and I am so proud of them all.”
