Eagles fall in baseball, women’s tennis

TEXARKANA, Texas — Texas Wesleyan exploded for 10 runs in three innings to defeat Texas A&M University-Texarkana, 14-8, in college baseball action Tuesday at Spring Lake Park’s Dobson Field.

The Eagles slip to 6-10 on the season while the visiting Rams won their fourth straight and improve to 13-5.

Texas Wesleyan, from Fort Worth, Texas, outhit TAMU-T, 18-10, including 7-4 in extra-base hits. The Rams’ Grayson Barrett belted a 3-run homer and 2-run double. Carson Cheany also had 4 hits, 2 RBI and scored 4 runs.

The Eagles were led by Luke Hyzdu with 3 hits, including a pair of doubles, to drive in a run. He also scored twice. Giancarlo Mijares and Masashi Takegama had 2 hits each, with Takegama knocking in 2 runs. Hunter Reid also had a hit in 3 at-bats and scored 3 runs.

The Eagles took a 4-2 lead after 2 innings, but the Rams scored 5, 2 and 3 runs in the next 3 frames to build a 12-4 advantage.

The hosts scored a single run in the seventh and added two more in the ninth, but that was as close as they came.

TAMU-T relief pitcher Blake Taylor took the loss, allowing 5 runs on 5 hits in 1 1/3 innings. He replaced starter Collin Fenili in the second inning.

The Eagles’ next action will be a 3-game series at home against Texas College (0-7) from Tyler, Texas. Friday will be a single game starting at 2 p.m., followed by a Saturday doublehead­er beginning at noon.

TENNIS EAGLES FALL TO REDDIES

TEXARKANA, Texas – Mulan Kamoe and Kristina Kozlova paired up for the first time this season along with Haarini Balakrishn­an and Jenna Kate Bohnert as the debut pairings led Henderson State (3-2) to a 6-1 victory over Texas A&M-Texarkana Tuesday afternoon.

After sweeping doubles play, HSU relinquish­ed just five additional games before clinching the match with wins at Nos. 3-5 in singles action.

The Eagles’ lone win came in No. 2 singles where Andrea Barcenas defeated Kristina Kozlova, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6).

New partners Balakrishn­an and Bohnert notched the first doubles win for the Reddies, winning at the No. 2 spot, 6-1. Marianna Murcia and Tirzah Bailey recorded their fourth win of the season, 6-2, as the tandem is 4-0 in 2023.

Kamoe and Kozlova, who came into the new campaign as the No. 6 doubles team in the Central Region, saw their first match together this season. The regionally-ranked duo claimed a 6-1 victory at the top line to complete the doubles sweep.

Sporting a 1-0 lead, Murcia, Balakrishn­an and Bohnert made quick work of their opponents to clinch the match, losing a total of just five games between the three of them. Murcia kicked off the singles wins with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 3 to make it to 2-0.

Moments later, Balakrishn­an and Bohnert each overcame their adversarie­s, 6-1, 6-1. With the contest already in hand, Kamoe and Danna Nunez added

a pair of straight-set victories to the match total.
