HUGH “SONNY” CARNEY III

On Tuesday, July 4, 2023, after a brief illness, Sonny went to be with his Lord and Savior. He was born September 11, 1947 in Atlanta, Texas to Hugh Carney, Jr. (Son) and Dorothy Smith Carney.

Sonny spent his whole life in Atlanta. He was a car dealer for over fifty years. He opened Carney Motor Company in 1978 and was still working up until his death. He loved going to car auctions, not just to buy cars, but to see his dealer friends.

He served his beloved community by serving on the Atlanta ISD Board of Trustees, the Cass County Appraisal Board and was a member of the Lions Club. He was an unofficial Atlanta Historian and never met a stranger. His personalit­y was contagious and his heart was big.

Caddo Lake was very special to Sonny and he spent many days there deer and duck hunting, water skiing, frying fish, playing cards, dominoes and spending time with his family and friends. He also loved going to Colorado to elk hunt and his annual trips to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Sara Lee Flint Meyer and his in laws, HT and Una Mae Burrow. He is survived by his wife of fifty five years, Elaine, daughter, Stephanie and son in law, Dr. Jaret Walker, son Hugh Carney IV, granddaugh­ter, Carney Porter, brother, Charles Flint and wife Judy, brothers and sisters in law, David and Lou Walls, HT and Gayle Burrow, Tim and Janet Burrow, Bobby Burrow and Todd Burrow, numerous nephews, nieces, great nephews, nieces and many very dear cousins.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Sunday, July 9, 2023 at First Baptist Church of Atlanta, under the direction of Hanner Funeral Service, with Matt Idom and Gary Davis officiatin­g.

Visitation will be Saturday, July 8, 2023 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Hanner Funeral Home, Atlanta, Texas.

Interment will be in the Linden Cemetery.
