HOOKS, Texas — Hooks Independent School District is making gains on a number of projects approved with the passing of $12.5 million bond in 2021

The $11.2 million Proposition A encompasses a number of projects, including constructing a multipurpose facility; replacing the junior high quad building; replacing the elementary classroom building; renovating the high school wing; constructing the elementary outdoor physical education pavilion; constructing a new junior high agriculture shop renovating the junior high restrooms; and additions and alterations to Branch Bank.

District spokesperson Lisa Tullis said piers are being set for the new wings at the elementary and junior high campuses, as well as for a new gymnasium. Wings at the elementary and junior High campuses had to be demolished to make room for the construction.

“They’re kind of doing the same steps in both places, at least for the next little while,” Tullis said.

The elementary wing’s air conditioning and heating systems were outdated, Tullis explained. The facility is being reconstructed with new classrooms The junior high structure was outdated as well.

“The last time we talked, we were in the process of removing four structures that have been purchased and are located on the acreage of where the gym is going to sit,” Tullis said. “Those have been removed.”

Starting April 1, the district will take bids for electrical lines for the new gymnasium, as well as tree removal and groundwork.

Tullis said constructing the new wings and the gymnasium are priorities, because the buildings would be used daily by students.

“The construction is set to begin in the next two weeks for both of these,” Tullis said.

Proposition B approved $1.3 million for construction of an indoor practice facility. Work on it will not begin until the Proposition A projects are complete Tullis said.
