PENNSBURY – Used bicycles often sit idle in garages, but there is a way to put them to good use.

The National Honor Society (NHS) at Pennsbury High School will be collecting used bicycles at the school’s annual homecoming carnival and football game on Saturday, Oct. 6.

NHS leaders say the bicycles may be any size and in any condition. All donations wLOO EHnHfiW WKH BRyV DnG Girls Club of Trenton.

Bicycles may be dropped off at Pennsbury High School – East Campus, 705 Hood Boulevard, Fairless Hills, from 3 to 6 p.m. Donors should look for the blue tent at the entrance of the building.

Debra Wachspress, director of Community Engagement for the Boys and Girls Club of Trenton, said the club serves children in K12th grade.

The program goal is keeping kids in school and engaged so they can graduate from high school, move on to college, trade school and career paths.

“We run programs for K through eighth grade, which include educational support, recreational programs, programs that focus on character development and leadership,” Wachpress said.

“At this level, we continue to run programs that support kids’ educational development, free SAT classes, poetry nights, and tutoring math and writing development,” she continued.

The bikes are being collected from the Pennsbury NHS through the club’s Bike Exchange. Russ White, owner of Firehouse Bikes on South Main Street in Yardley Borough, is leading the effort.

People were asking White what Firehouse Bikes could do with their used bikes. “There’s a market for used bikes,” Wachpress said. Community and scouting groups are among those who run drives.

The Boys and Girls Club has a team that cleans the bicycles. The club has a shop in Ewing Township where the bikes are sold.

“It’s part of our club,” Wachpress said. ”It’s a volunteer initiative activity run completely by volunteers. Russ manages it.”

For three seasons, this effort has brought over $300,000 nHW SURfiW WR WKH club. She said once the public announcement is made that used bikes are being collected, “the bikes come pouring in. People come from all over to buy them.”

Wachpress said the challenging part of the collection process is cleaning up the bikes and getting them ready WR SuW Rn WKH VHOOLng flRRU.
