Santa Claus joins the mayor in lighting the town tree
NEWTOWN - Hey Santa, where are your reindeer? That’s what one youngster wanted to know as Santa arrived at Newtown’s annual tree lighting ceremony Friday night in an antique car driven by Bob Norman.
Letting out a jolly “Ho, ho, ho,” Santa disembarked from the car into a sea of rosy-cheeked youngsters bundled up against the late November chill.
“Why the reindeer are at home at the North Pole resting up for the big Christmas Eve ride,” he said, responding to the tyke’s question.
As Santa made his way through the crowd, he smiled and waved as parents captured the magical moment on their iPhones.
The man of the hour soon joined the other man of the hour, 0DyRr DHnnLs 2’BrLHn, Ln wHOFRPLng WhH FrRwG DnG RIfiFLDOOy lighting the town’s tree.
Norman Rockwell couldn’t have painted a more perfect scene as parents and children warmed up with cups of hot cocoa, holiday tunes wafted through the air performed by musician Chuck Schaffer and youngsters shared their Christmas wishes with Santa.
If you missed Santa, don’t worry. He’ll be at his house at the Newtown Fire Association from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 8, 9, 15 and 16.
State Street merchants and restaurants will also hit full stride Friday, Dec. 7 with their annual Midnight Madness Sale beginning at 7 p.m.
As the hour grows later, the madness increases with deeper and deeper discounts. Participating merchants will offer refreshments, special sales, draw-your-own discounts, and lots more.
The State Street merchants are also running a Holiday dift diveaway. More than A2,000 in gifts donated by borough businesses will be given away, 10 winners in all. Shoppers are eligible to enter at participating businesses, designated by a sign in the window. The drawing will be held Dec. 15.
