LOWER jAhEFIELD – The Lower jakefield seterans Committee will hold its 4th Annual Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament fundraiser on Saturday, April 6 at a new location – jichael’s Restaurant, 935 Lincoln Highway, jorrisville.

The suggested donation is $T5 to play. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the tournament begins at T. For information, call 21591T-0046 or visit www. seteransSquare.org.

Proceeds will benefit the seterans Square jonument to be built near the intersection of Edgewood and Heacock roads in Lower jakefield Township.

In other committee news, internationally-known sculptor Robert Girandola, who is creating a life-size bronze eagle to grace the top of seterans Square jonument, has finished the first phase - creating the eagle and the surrounding three-dimensional bas relief plaques – the clay molds.

Committee members were wowed after viewing the molds in Girandola’s Lower jakefield studio.

The eagle will “perch” atop the highest part of the serpentine-shaped wall of the monument at nine-feet high, ready to take flight. The two bas relief plaques will be affixed to both sides of the wall.

jeanwhile, the Lower jakefield Electronic jedia Advisory Committee has completed a 20-minute video of the November 2012 seterans Day Parade and the story behind the creation of the seterans Square jonument. It features footage of the parade and interviews with local veterans and dignitaries.

The video will air on the township website and cable channel, the “Lower jakefield is a nice place to Live” facebook page, area veterans organizations’ websites, and is available on vouTube at youtu.be/gxAnSnhvA2I

The committee continues working toward becoming a nonprofit organization, filing the paperwork required to separate from the township’s community foundation in order to have more autonomy with various businesses and community organizations who can contribute time or materials toward the monument. The committee hopes to achieve nonprofit status soon, and will then begin the bidding process.

jore funds will likely still need to be raised and the community is invited to participate in the committee’s Stepping Stone Campaign to purchase a Freedom Paver and be a permanent part of the monument. Names of veterans who lived in Lower jakefield or vardley at any time are still being collected to be engraved at no charge on the monument’s Wall of Honor.

The committee is also working on a new landscape plan for the park after a large, majestic oak tree at seterans Square Park that was to have visually grounded the monument was knocked down during Hurricane Sandy last Oc- tober.

The committee has laid out a plan whereby an evergreen border will be created on the property, which will block the view of the commercial building adjacent to the park. There will also be a small grove of hardy cherry or Hawthorne trees that will provide beauty and soft lines as a backdrop to the monument. This will be done in phases with the first phase being the evergreen border. They could be planted either this spring or next fall. The veterans committee is receiving the plants at no charge, but is requesting a donation of labor or an organization to step up to plant the trees.

It has also been announced that the seterans Square memorial will receive a portion of the proceeds raised by the jakefield Women’s Association when it holds its first Harvest Day at Shady Brook Farm on Sept. 21 featuring more than 100 crafters, food and entertainment.
