The Advance of Bucks County

Athlete of the Week Sajanna Bethea, Pennsbury basketball

- Compiled by Vince Paravecchia

As has been the norm during the postseason, Sajanna Bethea carried Pennsbury from a scoring standpoint in the first round of the PIAA Class AAAA tournament on March 8. Against Nazareth, the aistrict 11 champions, the junior guard/forward and cocaptain scored a team-high 15 points and helped the Falcons stay in the game before falling, 41-28.

Even so, Pennsbury made a remarkable run this postseason, starting as a 20th seed in districts and finishing a state-bid clinching eighth thanks to upsets of Council Rock South and Neshaminy. Bethea scored 30 and 22 points, respectively, to lead all scorers in both contests. Those wins got the Falcons to the district quarterfinals, where they fell to West Chester Rustin despite her 11-point effort.

Pennsbury also lost its two playback games to Central Bucks West and Boyertown, but Bethea averaged 18 points in those two setbacks. She’ll be one of two starters and several other players with decent to significant playing experience back to headline what should be a potent Falcons squad next season.
