- By Staff Reports

FALLS TOWNSHIP – Bucks County Coroner James Campbell, M.a. has confirmed the identity of the man who fatally shot himself Saturday, March 16 at aicks Sporting Goods store.

Mark McCarty, 58, of Levittown barricaded himself in the store’s bathroom where police found him dead at 11:22 p.m. -- four hours after the standoff began.

Campbell said it was a “self-inflicted gun shot wound to the chest.” “It’s clearly suicide,” he said. McCarty had obtained a 12-gauge shotgun and ammunition from a clerk at the store’s gun display counter. He demanded that the clerk unlock the shotgun.

When the clerk refused, McCarty pointed a revolver at the clerk, demanding that the clerk unlock the shotgun, which the clerk did. McCarty had concealed the revolver.

As they were fleeing, employees wove through the aisles alerting customers to exit the store.

Police from numerous municipalities and SWAT officers rushed to the scene and evacuated the store. Also on the scene were members of the South Central Emergency Response Team.

Later, the shopping center and the parking lot were cordoned off by Falls fire police.

Police used a robot to locate McCarty, who was dead on the bathroom floor.

Lt. Henry Ward of the Falls Township Police aepartment said that McCarty had been in trouble with the police before, including a standoff with Middletown Township Police officers in 2002.

Also, McCarty had been involuntarily committed in 2010 for mental health treatment.

No notes were found from McCarty explaining why he took his life, according to police.
