NEWTOWN BOROrdH – The Newtown Borough Council on June 11 voted unanimously to promote police officer Sean Patrick Orr to the rank of corporal effective July 1.

Orr, 35, of Horsham, has worked full-time in the department since Nov. 2008. He is a graduate of Bishop McDevitt High School in Wyncote and completed his Act 120 training at Montgomery County Community College in 2006.

Orr will serve as the police chief’s full-time officer/administrator during the nighttime shift, according to Mayor Dennis O’Brien.

In other action at the meeting, council awarded a bid for $29,470 to Bray Brothers, Inc., for a repaving project on Liberty Street between Jefferson and dreene.

Bray Brothers submitted the lowest bid for the work, which is expected to take place sometime after the Independence Day holi- day.

“Liberty Street will be a challenge,” said Council President Bob Walker. “It has been in disrepair for a while.”

Also during the meeting, Councilman John Burke put out a call for volunteers to serve on the borough’s boards and committees. In particular, he said the Environmental Advisory Council is in need of help.

Burke noted that a recent influx of new volunteers has helped to “reinvigorate” and “revitalize” the borough’s park and recreation board.

Anyone interested in serving should send a cover letter and resume to Newtown Borough Secretary Marcia Scull, 23 North State Street, Newtown, or call 215-968-2109 during regular office hours.

It was also announced at the meeting that the annual “Movies in the Park” series, sponsored by the park and recreation board, will begin at dusk on June 26 at Linton Memorial Park, Lincoln Avenue and Penn Street. The featured movie will be “The Burbs.”
