State Street merchants to help their neighbors with food drive on ‘First Saturday’

NEWTOWN BOROUGH – First Saturday, an ongoing series of events in charming downtown historic Newtown, continues on Saturday, July 6.

This month, merchants are also hoping to help their neighbors by collecting canned goods for the Penndel Food Pantry. Merchants will accept donations (chicken, tuna, beef stew, chili, hash), canned fruit, juice, EDNLNJ SURGuFWV (flRuU, VuJDU, RLOV), FRNGLments and all varieties of beans. Participat­ing merchants will have window signage displayed.

The Newtown Library Company will hold a children’s story hour with a “Princesses, Knights and Dragons” theme, perfect for 3-6 year olds, starting at 10:30 a.m. There will be stories, songs, dancing and a craft activity (parents are asked to remain on premises).

The Newtown Bookshop is launching a “Where’s Waldo?” scavenger hunt which will run through July 29 and offer a fun diversion for kids of all ages. Details and passbooks are available at the shop.

David Witchell will be having a big sidewalk sale and Newtown Book and Record Exchange is offering 10 percent off all used merchandis­e and a free Beatles tote bag with any purchase over $35 - while supplies last.

Most restaurant­s will be offering something extra special. Becky’s Newtown Deli will have a specially priced sandwich (along wLWK WKH RSSRUWuNLW­y WR wLN D JLIW FHUWLfiFDW­H for lunch if you donate a canned good). The Temperance House is offering 10 percent off your lunch check with a receipt from any Saturday State street store purchase.

Stop by Coldwell Banker Hearthside Realtors from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to pick up informatio­n about First Saturday events and other fun happenings in the Newtown area (and enter to win a VISA gift card. Enter twice if you bring a donation of food for Penndel).

A Facebook page offering more detailed informatio­n has been set up called “Newtown PA 18940” (case sensitive entry). August’s “First Saturday” event will be held on August 3.
