Exchange names Council Rock’s Melissa Zhou ‘Student of the Year’
NEWTOWN - Council Rock graduate Melissa Zhou took top honors at the Greater Newtown Exchange Club’s (GNEC’s) annual June Core Creek Picnic where she received GNEC’s Student of the Year award.
The coveted award and accompanying monetary gift is awarded annually to a winning student selected from GNEC’s Student of the Month award winners. The win signifies the epitome of the winning student’s academic achievement, social outreach and service to others.
Zhou graduated in the top two percent of her senior class and was a distinguished honor roll student and invitee to the Principal’s Breakfast. Her school activities included public relations for the Science National Honor Society, color guard captain and student tutoring. Her community activities included sewing dresses for South African orphans via Dresses with Love and dance performances choreographed by Debra Sparks Dance Works, which she performed for nursing homes.
Zhou’s travel experiences include a People To People student ambassadorship to Europe, a trip to Argentina with the marching band and visits to China with friends and family. Her hobbies and interests include dance lessons and classes at Newtown Yardley Chinese School. Zhou is looking forward to entering college at the University of Virginia.
