Carber records ace in first round of districts

- By Tom Kerrane

Andrew Carber’s mother, Maggie, had made up her mind that she was going to walk with her son and see every shot he hit during Tuesday’s fiUVW URunG RI WKH DLVWULFW 2nH GROI Championships.

She was there on the 18th tee at 10 a.m. when her son teed off to begin his quest at Turtle Creek dolf Course.

Carber, from Upper Dublin High, took 73 shots during the opening round, 1-over-par, to put himself in a tie for sixth place heading into :HGnHVGDy’V finDO URunG.

His mother saw 72 of those 73 shots. The one she missed is the one she wished she had seen the most.

AV CDUEHU’V IRuUVRPH ZDV finLVKing up on the eighth green and heading to the par-3 ninth tee, Maggie Carber decided this would be an opportune time to go to the clubhouse to use the rest room before heading out onto the back nine. As she exited the ladies room a few minutes later, she heard some roars coming from her son’s direction.

The commotion was created when her son used a 7-iron at the 191yDUG nLnWK WR UHFRUG KLV fiUVW FDUHHU hole-in-one. She would only hear the reaction.

CDUEHU EULHfly FHOHEUDWHG KLV DFH, then would head to the back nine, where he responded by parring the 10th hole. He stands three shots back of district leader Paul Yun of Radnor, who carded a 70 Tuesday.

“7KDW ZDV Py fiUVW RnH DnG LW ZDV D special one,” Carber said of his holein-one. “I hit a seven in there and it dropped. That was sweet.

“There have been some 73s I’ve had in my life, but not any hole-inones, so I’ll probably remember the one shot more than what I shot.”

Maggie Carber, on the other hand, will remember the one shot she did not see.

“It’s been a running joke with us,” she said. “I tell him that I think I jinx him. He plays so well when I’m not there. But I wanted to come here.

“We decided this would be a good time to go use the bathroom and catch them when they get to the back nine. I come out of the ladies room and people are waving to me. I’m a mom, so I’m thinking he’s passed out or something, he got hit with a golf ball. I’m thinking the worst.

“Then they tell me he had a holein-one.”

Just three shots out of the lead, this is what Carber had his sights set on for Wednesday.

For Carber, though, the plan might be a little unorthodox.

“I am spending the entire day (Wednesday) in the ladies room,” said Maggie Carber.

Well, it sure worked during the fiUVW URunG.
