Chandler’s Hoops finishes 1st after AZ Amateur stroke play

Bryan Hoops of Chandler followed Monday’s 66 with a 71 on Tuesday to capture the 36-hole stroke-play portion of the 89th Arizona Amateur Championsh­ip at Scottsdale’s Pinnacle Peak Country Club.

Defending champion Andy Aduddell, an F-16 fighter pilot at Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, was a stroke back at138 after backto-back rounds of 69. Cody McManus of Phoenix was at 139 after shooting 72 and 67.

The 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying cut the field of 144 to 64. The tourney shifts to match play over the next four days to determine a champion.

Oosthuizen to take time off

Louis Oosthuizen will take two months away from golf to let a series of injuries heal.

Oosthuizen had to withdraw from the U.S. Open and the British Open because of injuries to his neck, back and hip. He will miss the Bridgeston­e Invitation­al this week and the PGA Championsh­ip next week at Oak Hill.

The 2010 British Open champion is treating the injuries with rest and strengthen­ing exercises.

100-hole marathon

The Junior Golf Associatio­n of Arizona will hold its annual 100Hole Golf Marathon on Sept. 21 at the Bear Creek Golf Complex in Chandler.

The event challenges participan­ts to play100 holes in one day in the shortest amount of time — all while raising funds for the JGAA, which introduces Arizona’s youth to the sport and helps junior players develop golf and life skills through educationa­l programs and tournament­s.

This year the fundraisin­g goal is $125,000, and expects to draw 50 players. There is no entry fee.
