What do jalapeños that breathe fire and peas as sweet as candy have in common? Both begin as seeds.
“Without a seed you don’t have a garden,” said Greg Peterson, founder of the Urban Farm in Phoenix.
To help make it easier to buy seeds for vegetables that grow well in the desert, a coalition of Valley preservationists will host the inaugural Great American Seed-Up on Saturday, May 16, at North Phoenix Baptist Church.
Gardeners will be able to scoop up 47 varieties and 1,400 pounds of vegetable seeds, including kale, Swiss chard, lettuces and squash. None of the seeds will be for hybrid or genetically modified vegetables. The entry fee of $20 will be applied to the purchase of seeds.
In addition to seeds for sale, SeedUp includes presentations and workshops led by seed experts on traditional and modern seed-saving practices, from how to properly store seeds to establishing a seed library.
“The idea is to give our community an opportunity to learn about seed saving, and then to harvest as many ounces or pounds of seed as they want,” Peter- son said.
The event is sponsored by seedsave .org, the Urban Farm, the Micro Farm Project and Grow PHX, all Valley gardening-education and -advocacy programs.
