Arizona Newspaper Associatio­n honors Arizona Republic staff

The Arizona Republic and its staff won 26 Arizona Newspaper Associatio­n awards, including daily Arizona Newspaper of the Year, at the 77th annual fall convention Saturday night.

Reporter Michael Kiefer won daily story of the year for his article on a modern-day Tempe Bonnie and Clyde convicted of a series of heists. Kiefer and Anne Ryman won a Freedom of Informatio­n Award for their story detailing the shooting of four Northern Arizona University students by a fellow student in October. The reporters used records and videos acquired from over a dozen public record requests to tell the story of what happened that night. Three students were injured; Colin Brough died.

The Arizona Newspaper Associatio­n, a non-profit representi­ng more than 115 Arizona newspapers, was establishe­d in 1930.
