Hall of Fame swimming coach Gillett dies

Bob Gillett, best known for coaching 2000 Olympic swimming gold medalist Misty Hyman, died Saturday at his Arizona home.

Gillett was inducted into the Internatio­nal Swim Coaches Associatio­n Hall of Fame last year for a 50-year career that included working with swimmers who won 20 national and 50 junior national championsh­ips.

ASU baseball falls to No. 1 TCU

No. 1 TCU jumped ahead early with a three-run first inning and cruised to an 8-4 win over ASU baseball Saturday in Fort Worth, Texas. Carter Aldrete led the Sun Devils with a pair of RBIs.

ASU hockey wraps season with victory

ASU hockey closed its season with a victory, defeating the the U.S. National Under-18 Team 6-3 on Saturday in Plymouth, Mich. ASU lost Game 1 of the back-to-back set 5-3 on Friday.

Reed grabs Xfinity win in Daytona wreck-fest

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Ryan Reed picked up the second Xfinity Series victory of his career — both at Daytona Internatio­nal Speedway — by winning the wreck-filled season-opener Saturday.

Reed held off Austin Dillon and Kasey Kahne in a two-lap overtime shootout to win in a Ford for Roush Fenway Racing. Reed’s only other career victory came in this race in 2015.

Kahne finished second in a Chevrolet for JR Motorsport­s, which had five cars in the field and a rough day because of all the accidents.

Austin Dillon was third in a Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing, and Brad Keselowski was fourth in a Team Penske Ford. Scott Lagasse was sixth and the highest finishing Toyota driver.

Bettman upholds Vermette’s 10-game ban

NHL Commission­er Gary Bettman has upheld the 10-game suspension assessed to Anaheim Ducks center Antoine Vermette. Mikko Koivu during the third period of the Ducks’ 1-0 win on Feb. 14. Vermette had a hearing with Bettman on Thursday after appealing the initial suspension.

Bettman announced Saturday that the 10-game ban would remain; Vermette has served four games already.

Vermette will lose $97,222 in salary.

Oklahoma QB Mayfield arrested

Oklahoma quarterbac­k Baker Mayfield has been arrested and charged with public intoxicati­on, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest in Fayettevil­le, Ark.

Mayfield, a Heisman Trophy finalist last year, was booked into the Washington County Jail after first walking, then running away and being tackled by an officer following an altercatio­n near Fayettevil­le’s Dickson Street early Saturday, police said.

A preliminar­y police report said an intoxicate­d Mayfield first told an officer he was trying to break up an altercatio­n, but that he later “was yelling profanitie­s and causing a scene” while the officer questioned another man. After Mayfield was tackled, he refused to put his arms behind his back and was eventually forced into handcuffs before being arrested, police said.

Tsonga beats Kyrgios to set up all-French final

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated defending champion Nick Kyrgios 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-4 at the Open 13 on Saturday, setting up an all-French final at the indoor tournament in Marseille, France.

The first matchup between the pair was hard-fought as Tsonga weathered 16 aces from the Australian, saved five break points and broke early in the decider to prevail in more than two hours.

Sock beats Young to reach Delray Beach final

Jack Sock won the last seven points of a second-set tiebreaker to beat Donald Young 6-4, 7-6 (2) on Saturday in an all-American semifinal at the Delray Beach (Fla.) Open.
