68, of Chandler, AZ passed to eternal life February 13, 2017. Rick was born to Leon and Olney Rose in Kermit, TX on August 10, 1948. He grew up to be a gifted baseball player and profession­al golfer. Throughout his profession­al golfing career he obtained five holes in one, numerous wins and titles. Rick joined the US Army in 1969 and was a decorated sharpshoot­er during the Vietnam War. He became a successful businessma­n with a Masters Degree in Global Management, retiring from Boeing in 2010. Rick is survived by his beloved wife of 21 years, Emily; son, Richard Leon and his wife, Teresa, of Broken Arrow, OK; grandchild­ren Jaxon, Blayne, Marie and Sophie all of AZ. His belief that hard work and perseveran­ce made anything possible and his passion for golf and family will continue to inspire the lives of those he loved. Interment at the National Memorial Cemetery of AZ. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Valley (Dobson Home), 1510 E. Flower St., Phx, AZ 85014. Joan Updike-Martin, 83, of Surprise, Arizona passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family, February 9, 2017. She was born in Haverhill, Massachuse­tts on May 14, 1933, to the late Jack and Alice Avedian. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband and companion of 25 years, Richard Martin as well as a sister, Jeanette Talbot. She is survived by her two sons: Jack Updike and his wife Nikki, of Cave Creek, Arizona; and Ken Updike and his wife Mary, of Southport, North Carolina, two step children Vicki Martin, of Fox Lake, IL, and Richard Martin and his wife Audrey, of Rockford, Illinois. She also leaves her younger sister, Debbie Flynn of Pittsfield, Massachuse­tts, 11 grandchild­ren and 7 great grandchild­ren and many nieces & nephews. A memorial service will be held Friday, March 24, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. at Sunland Mortuary, 15826 Del Webb Blvd., Sun City, AZ 85351. A reception will follow. Interment will be private at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona where Joan will rest beside her loving husband Richard.
