At the plate: 2B Daniel Descalso drilled a solo home run in the fifth, the first of three runs the Diamondbacks would score in the inning as they took the lead for good. “It’s early, so you try not to focus on results,” Descalso said. “You try to have good at-bats, have a good plan, get your timing down. Right now, the focus is more on the process and getting comfortable in the box, and I felt good out there today. I’ll take it.” Descalso also walked and drove a ball deep to center field in his two other trips to the plate. CF Socrates Brito had a pair of hits, including a double, and 1B Paul Goldschmidt singled and drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. On the mound: After RHP Taijuan Walker’s strong debut, the Diamondbacks received scoreless appearances from four of the next six pitchers who threw, including LHP Josh Taylor, a Peoria Centennial High produce who struck out two and walked one in two hitless innings. RHP Keyvius Sampson and RHP Miller Diaz allowed two runs apiece. Extra bases: PR/RF Jeremy Hazelbaker ran through a stop sign at third base but scored anyway, going from first to home on a single by RF Oswaldo Arcia in the sixth. 2B Jack Reinheimer, playing deep on a shift, made a diving stop on a 1B James Loney ground ball to take a potential hit away in the bottom of the sixth. Reinheimer, primarily a shortstop, is considered one of the better defensive shortstops in the organization. C Jeff Mathis had his throwing arm tested twice; 2B Drew Robinson stole second in the third but CF Jared Hoying was thrown out in the fourth. “I’m still trying to get my legs and everything together and under me,” Mathis said. “My arm is feeling good, too.
