RALEIGH, N.C. – The Coyotes avoided returning home empty-handed from their three-game tour of the Eastern Conference, holding off the Hurricanes 4-2 Friday at PNC Arena to finish 1-2 on the trip.

Captain Shane Doan turned in a three-point effort, setting up two goals, including the game-winner. He funneled the puck into the slot, where center Jordan Martinook buried it at 9:02 of the third period to break a 2-2 tie. Doan also added an empty-netter on the power play with 59 seconds to go.

Before then, the Coyotes had a twogoal lead in the first period, with center Christian Dvorak opening the scoring at 11:34 when he one-timed a cross-ice pass off the rush from Doan by Carolina goalie Cam Ward. Defenseman Alex Goligoski tacked on another at 17:29, his second goal in as many games, when he roofed a puck over Ward from the slot after jumping up into the play.

But the Hurricanes started their rally with 49 seconds left in the period, cutting their deficit in half on a deflection by winger Lee Stempniak off a defenseman Jaccob Slavin point shot. That momentum carried over to the second with Carolina tying it just 1:30 into the second. Winger Teuvo Teravainen fed center Jordan Staal after pulling goalie Louis Domingue to the near post, giving Staal ample time to settle the puck and wire it in before Domingue could regain his positioning.

Domingue appeared to awkwardly shift back to the middle of the crease and was evaluated by the Coyotes’ head athletic trainer Jason Serbus, but he remained in the game and ended up with 32 saves. Ward had 18.

Arizona went 1-for-3 on the power play, while Carolina was 0-for-2.
